|
|
Hi all,
We want to give you all the chance to add your own personal message to the Guilt Machine album. Our idea is to use your voice recordings in your own native languages as a part of the soundscape of the album. All you need to be able to submit your message are:
(a) the ability to translate your message roughly into English (so we will know what you're saying), and
(b) some way to record and send us your message (we give several options on the website).
HOW WILL THE MESSAGES BE USED?
Because we don't know exactly what you all will come up with, we can't yet say exactly how the samples will be used. But at this point we are planning to use them in segues between the songs as well as within the songs themselves.
WHAT SHOULD THE MESSAGES BE ABOUT?
Ideally, your message will have something to do with the overall theme of the album: guilt, regret, and unspoken hopes, fears and dreams. But even cheery, uplifting messages about what makes life meaningful to you would also fit. Just remember to keep it short and punchy - a couple of sentences or max 10 seconds is a good guideline.
COOL! WHERE DO I GO TO GET STARTED?
Now that you've read through all the boring stuff, here is where you need to go when you are ready to record or email your audio message:
http://www.arjenlucassen.com/gm/index.html
You guys and gals here on the forum are the first to be invited to participate. Please post here if you have any questions or run into any problems with stuff that just doesn't work. I've posted the answers to some questions I've already anticipated in the little FAQ below.
Good luck, and have fun!
****************************************
FAQ
Q: My native language is English. Can I still record a message?
A: Yes.
Q: Can I submit more than one message?
A: You can submit as many as you like.
Q: How long can my message be?
A: Keep it short. 1-2 sentences or max 10 seconds is a good guideline. That's for the "quotable" part of your message. Of course the total message length including both languages can be longer than 10 seconds.
Q: Why is there only a US phone number? Why don't you have a local phone number for my country?
A: We are happy to add more landline numbers in different countries. If you know of a free voicemail service in your country, please email [ management AT arjenlucassen DOT com ] with the details and I will add it.
Q: What is the deadline?
A: The deadline for submissions is Sunday, March 15, 2009, at midnight Central European Time.
Q: Is the Guilt Machine logo on the site the real logo?
A: No. The logo has not been designed yet. It's just a font we liked.
Q: Will you use all submissions?
A: Unfortunately we can't possibly use them all, and will have to select the strongest ones. So think carefully about your message and try to come up with something heartfelt.
Q: Will I get credit in the booklet if you use my message?
A: Because we encourage people to dig deep and come up with truly heartfelt messages, we will treat all submissions as anonymous/confidential unless you specifically ask to be credited.

| All you need is a phone. If you know what you want to say before placing the call, it shouldn't take more than 2 minutes to make the call (to the USA, unless someone can tip me about other free voicemail solutions). So unless you are on a phone plan with horrid long-distance rates, it would not be an expensive call. I think I pay like 6 Euro cents per minute to the US. |

I don't think anonymity would be an option for me. Everyone would be trying to find a Scottish accent in there |

That's been my biggest issue all along. Part of what makes the cult of public confession (eg. PostSecret, one sentence stories, etc.) so appealing is that people can be truly anonymous. But we figured it is worth a try anyway! |

Now I like this.. reminds me a bit of that track on Pain of Salvation's "Be" where they had people phone in their messages to god.
I am definately going to try something here.. just because of the awesomeness of the idea.

Hehe. Well i don't think I would do it anonymously anyway, but I can imagine McNeacol won't ignore it. |

I just went ahead and did so. I just recorded it once, instead of twice. |

Good question. Sure, if English is your language then that's fine -- you'd just say your message once. I've added this Q to the faq above. |

Ooh, sounds interesting. I wonder how much a Yorkshire accent would fit though... _________________

That's really interesting but before I try to make a phonecall, I better first consider if I can come up with something good. _________________

Sorry, that's not clear, is it! We will only use the part in your native language (or English, if that IS your native language). So the "quotable" part of your message should be max 10 seconds. In your case, that would be the Spanish part.
I hope that clears it up! |

That's an interesting idea.
I may participate.
I'm not too keen on the sound of my voice but the option of e-mailing a file will let me try a few takes before sending it. |

So far, no Norwegian.
For inspiration, perhaps a traditional saying or proverb? Or a line from (old) poetry -- from whoever is Norway's answer to Shakespeare, for example!
I suppose the only thing we don't want is lines from contemporary songs, particularly from the rock/prog/metal genre. |
