Watch Trailer

The story of “Lost in the New Real” follows Mr. L, a twenty-first century man who was cryopreserved at the moment of clinical death from a terminal disease. The album begins as Mr. L is being revived at a point in the distant future, when technology has advanced enough to cure his disease. Mr L finds himself in a world that has drastically changed — to the point that the line between what’s real and what’s not is no longer clear.

Mr. L’s appointed psychological advisor (played by legendary screen actor Rutger Hauer) is tasked with helping him emotionally adapt to this strange new world. The songs on CD1 follow the main character Mr. L’s emotional journey as he is confronted with both serious and comical aspects of the “New Real”, and desperately tries to decide if he can find a meaningful place within it.

CD2 is a mix of songs that are part of the concept but didn’t fit on CD1, and cover songs that are (more or less) related to the concept. As Arjen’s fans have come to expect, informative and humorous ‘behind the scenes’ videos are added to both CDs as CD-rom tracks. This beautiful 2-CD Limited Edition Mediabook is illustrated by the striking artwork of Claudio Bergamin.

Hey Arjen, I have you on Facebook, but here is nicer. (:

    How are you?

Well, I will listen to your new pretty enchanting album tomorrow! What I heard/listened from the Teaser, already captivated me. It seems a little bit of Pink Floyd on the ancient age and Rick Wakeman (when he was really wonderful and travelling).
I am almost sure I will be enchanted with your new child. :D

    - I do not know where you are now, so – A lovely almost dawn if you are in The Netherlands.

    Kuss!

    • Arjen says:

Of course it’s nicer here. Taissa, welcome! :-) All is well, pretty busy doing promotion for the new album. It’s being very well received I must say! Oh yes, Floyd and Wakeman will always be close :-) Hope you enjoy, let us know your thoughts!

      • Taissa Hora says:

        Welkom you, dear!
Yaai, that is good! Success (even more than you already have)! :D
I am loving it THAT MUCH. Still listening to the whole two albums. Pretty busy here too.
When I listen it for entire, I come here to tell you what I really thought. Even it is just one more thought from one more fan. But, it is still nice.

        Beautiful night!

  2. Przemek says:

Hi Arjen! Greetings from Poland :)
I really like your music. I started with “The Human Equation” and now I can’t stop listening to your albums :] Few days ago I bought “Lost In The New Real”. And what can I say…Album is melodic, sometimes funny, like in the “Where Pigs Fly (ya…”Jimi play the flute” :) ), or Pink Beatles In A Purple Zeppelin, and I really enjoy your voice here! :) You should sing more on your Ayreon albums :) Next thing – guitar solos. I know you hate practicing your technique, but who cares of it, that solo is very fast, fast or slow? Ya, I know, there are people who thinks that faster solos are better but…You know :) Solos, which are on this album are connected with song, they make sens, and they are melodic. It’s enough for me. The best songs for me are “E-Police”, “Parental Procreation Permit”, “Pink Beatles In Purple Zeppelin” and “When I’m Hundred Sixty-Four”. I have these melodies in my mind all the time and I can’t get rid of them :) Now some about CD2. I can’t really understand it. I mean, okay – we’ve got covers here and songs which didn’t fit on the first CD. But when I started listening to this CD for the first time, when i didn’t know it, I was confused. I thought it’ll be a continuation, and I didn’t know what’s going on :D All in all – I enjoy CD2, Welcome to the Machine is pretty good cover, but I prefer CD1 which is totally perfect for me. In the end I have question for you ;) There are movies on YouTube, where you’re in the studio and I have to ask you – do you do a mix by yourself? :)

So, thanks for your music and I’m waiting for the next solo album :)

    • Arjen says:

Pozdrawiam, Przemek, good to read you enjoy my music, and the new album in particular! Thanks for the compliments on the voice and guitar, much appreciated.

Yes, I agree that the whole CD1 and CD2 thing is a bit confusing. But I like the songs on CD2 too much not to use them, or to just call them bonus tracks.

You mean, do I mix my own music? Yes, basically I do everything myself. But Lori films and edits all the Youtube clips. Hope that answers your question!

  3. Tara says:

    Hi Arjen!

I’ve been a fan of all of your projects for so many years now. I started out with Into the Electric Castle and The Human Equation. I always listen to your music in my wood shop. In fact, I’m rocking out to Lost In The New Real right now and I love it!

Its’ absolutely incredible how each release sounds so unique and refreshing! So motivating! I am always looking forward to more. Thank you so much for all of the wonderful, wonderful music, Arjen!!! Take care!

    ♥ Tara

    • Arjen says:

Great to read you enjoy Ayreon and the solo album, Tara, thanks for letting me know! You’re very welcome. Good luck with your wood shop, hope the music will inspire you :-)

  4. Mirko Zarate says:

    Hola Arjen :)

I’ve been following your music from 6 years now and I stll vibrate with your songs and melody, starting with the masterpiece of my life, The Human Equation, passing trought all your projects and now with Lost In The New Real, somehow I still can’t belive that album actually happened jejeje The epic melodies, like in “Lost In The New Real” song… that grand finale is just overwhelming as hell. All your songs and album are so important in my life… I’m a music lover, even worst when of prog is about, and the things that you’ve created are just amazing. I let you know that you have a great fan here in Chile, maybe as none else, but not as a listener only, as a musician too :) I hope someday know you and maybe work together, who knows jejejeje.

Well, before I go, I just want to ask you one thing that I wanted to know long time ago… ¿What was the thing that maked you say “I want to be a musician” ? :)

Saludos Arjen desde Chile … Que tengas una excelente semana y sigue creando arte :)

    • Arjen says:

Thanks Mirko, good to read my music inspires you!

To answer your question; I never made that choice. I was always a musician, there was no choice for me!

      Saludos desde Holanda :-)

  5. Captain says:

I’m already addicted to this even though it’s not out in the States yet and all I can get are the 30-second snippets on Amazon. Tuesday can’t come soon enough.

  6. Rick Zaida says:

Hi Arjen… Maybe it’s old age for me, but can’t find the CD-ROM section of either disc. What am I doing (or not doing) that I can’t see these files on my PC? Help!!!

    • Rick Zaida says:

      Nevermind…LOL!!!

      • Arjen says:

Glad you found it, Rick! Yes, there is no easy answer, it depends on the computer I guess…

        • Rick Zaida says:

We’re really enjoying this new album Arjen! Thank you once again for rescuing our ears! You never disappoint us with your passion & originality, and of coarse… talent! Your talent & the talent that you surround yourself with… as always!

Unique version of Welcome To The Machine, and yet so fitting as well. As unique as it was when Pink Floyd released it, I believe Roger Waters would agree that you have made an appropriate version for this era!

The story, the music… it makes you think… Hmmm! What will the future be like! Have we created a world today that occasionaly blurs the lines of reality? Kids today have lost the art of face to face communication. It’s all done behind the wall of technology!

Thank you for letting the world know that we may be taking it all a little too far!!!

          All the best!!!

          • Arjen says:

Excellent Rick, you’re very welcome! Yes, I’m quite proud of the Welcome to the Machine cover. Not sure if Roger Waters would approve though…maybe better to let sleeping dogs lie, he might just sue me, haha!

Glad to read the concept made you think. Yes, you made some astute comments there. But even if it appears that way, I’m not totally negative about the future. Guess there’s still time to change, although some drastic measures need to be taken to do that. Let’s hope for the best and raise our children (provided we get a Parental Procreation Permit of course, haha) to the best of our abilities :-)

    • payter says:

Rick, please enlighten me, I also can’t find the CD-rom stuff…

      • Arjen says:

Sorry Payter, it depends totally on your computer, there is no standard answer…we already asked the record company. On my computer the CD-rom section starts automatically, and I had problems finding the audio at first! Guess I’m lost in the New Real as well :-)

        • payter says:

I think the US version doesn’t have the extra stuff on it :( . It’s also not mentioned on the back.

          • Arjen says:

Oh damn…really Payter? The record company told me nothing about this… I will investigate immediately!

          • payter says:

Yes, really… I guess they wanted to keep production cheap or something…

          • Arjen says:

I checked, and you’re right, Payter. Damn…I knew nothing about this. So sorry to hear this, it’s such a shame! Makes no sense… Anyway, thanks for letting us know!

  7. Steinar says:

    Hello Arjen!

Thanks for making another new masterpiece, the record is amazing at all aspects. I think this is your own “all things must pass” record, that really shows everything you are as a musician :-)

    Keep up the good work

    best wishes Steinar

    • Arjen says:

Wow…that is a great comparison, Steinar, I’m honored! I will use that quote in interviews from now on, haha!

  8. Fritz says:

There is not one release of yours that I don’t think of as a Masterpiece Arjen,
your Ayreon albums, Ambeon, Guilt Machine, the last Star One Album and now Lost in the new Real. You make a lot of people jealous, so I hope you feel bad about that haha :)
but seriously, congrads on your genious music!

    • Arjen says:

Thanks for the compliment, Fritz! Yeah…that makes me feel real bad…NOT! :-) Seriously though, I hope it will have the opposite effect and that it will inspire you!

  9. Annique says:

Concept! Variety! Even Middle-Eastern sounds! Got to love that :D
(and here I was thinking it would be an Anthony no. 3, which I would have found awesome enough)

    • Arjen says:

Variety indeed, Annique, glad you like it! And those ‘Arabian’ notes are never far from my music.

Well, maybe it’s sort of an Anthony 3…let’s call it a progression :-)

  10. Bane says:

im late with a comment on the album but… im just hooked to listening to it i guess… :) i really like it!! its great and really has the ‘Arjen sound’ (meaning the Arjen songs of Ayreon). great album, cant wait for anything else you make. ah.. im glad im a social recluse so i can listen to your music all day :) .

  11. Marek says:

First of all thank you once again for another sublime piece of music and something altogether very interesting. Admittedly, I’m sorry to say, I had slightly mixed feelings upon hearing the preview trailer with the various takes from different song. I was worried that the album might be a slightly miscellaneous bundle, that maybe there was a little too much going on. But of course my fleeting lack of trust was misplaced and the album turned out to be an absolute treat! In hindsigth this shouldn’t have been a surprise as you are to me the only artist, musician or whatever is the most fitting term whose output I can actually buy before hearing. In short – thank very much for your work.

Lastly I’d like to share my view on something that you mentioned in the making of “Behind the New Real”. Concerning how you had perhaps felt that you had been catering to your fans on your recent projects and how you were happy to do something, as I understood it, just the way you wanted to. In my humble opinion you should do musically exactly what you wish since the exceptional quality and intriquing content of your work has been more than shown for.

    • Arjen says:

You’re welcome, Marek. Glad the album eventually rose above your expectations! Yes, the trailer was pretty eclectic and daring, we opted for that. Maybe it was meant as a sort of warning to show people this album was definitely going to be something quite different from my last couple of (dark) releases.

Thanks for your interesting comment, and at the same a time big compliment. Yes, it seems that every time I do something for myself, Like Electric Castle and Human Equation, people seem to like it the best! Well…maybe I’ll learn my lesson one fine day :-)

  12. Dennis says:

After being a little bit disappointed with 01011001 I have to say great work with the new album. Very diverse, very catchy and overall pretty amazing. It’s hard to even name a favorite song for me, from “Our Imperfect Race” to “The Social Recluse” or even the amazing cover of “Some Other Time” everything is a joy to listen to.
My only gripe, which in and of itself is more like a compliment I guess, is that the melody that kicks in at 1:23 in “Lost in the new Real” is only used for the beginning of the song. I’m not sure what it is about it but that is one of the greatest melodies I’ve ever heard.
I think what I’m saying is thanks for the great new album, always looking forward to your next work.

    • Arjen says:

Thanks Dennis, good to read you like it so much! Yeah, 01011001 may have been a bit too much of everything. It was written in a difficult period in my life, so I can’t be entirely objective about that album.

Cool that you like that melody! Actually, it returns at 2m30, right? But yeah, this song hardly has any repeats, never did that before.

      • Oliver says:

        Hi Arjen,

I see you writing a lot of semi-apologetic things about 01011001. I’d just like to chime in and say that all emotions inform music, and many of the most remarkable musical endeavors of the last century are born of emotional turmoil. Make no apologies… 01011001 is a great and intense album.

        • Arjen says:

Thanks Oliver. Yes, I’m definitely proud of that album. I just think it features too many singers. Not enough space on the album to explore their talents to the max.

      • Dennis says:

I sounded maybe a bit harsher than it was intended to be. There are a lot of good things I have to say about that album, especially getting Jonas Renkse and Steve Lee for it was genius. There are quite a few great songs like Liquid Eternity, the great opener Age of Shadows or Beneath the Waves, I could really name most of the songs here.
What really throws me a bit of about the album are the very corny (even cornier than usually ;) ) lyrics of songs like Connect the Dots and Web of Lies. The only lyrics that I heard lately that are cornier than those is the line in the song “Manikin Parade” by Vangough being “can you hear God through that iPod?”. (amazing song apart from that though)
Also the whole timeline of the story being so compressed that it kind of seems all over the place with the flow between the songs.

But don’t get me wrong, 01011001 is still a great album and I still regularly listen to it with joy. When I say disappointing it’s pretty much relative to Into the Electric Castle being about my favorite album of all time. Compared to a lot of other bands 01011001 still blows most of it out of the water.

        • Dennis says:

Oh and yea the melody does come back at 2m30 but that was included in me saying “the beginning of the song”, still not enough of that melody for me :)

        • Arjen says:

No problem, Dennis, I encourage honesty! But the lyrics to Connect the Dots and Web of Lies were meant to be corny commonplace narratives. Deliberately… to show people how normal this way of living and acting has become in our society. So normal that people don’t even notice anything wrong or weird about them. In short: they don’t connect the dots for they are caught in this web of lies! (ouch, talking about corny…) I thought it was obvious myself, but a lot of people didn’t get the analogy to what ultimately happened to the Forever race.

Yes, I hope I can go back to the transparency and honesty of the Electric Castle album again one fine day. I mean musically speaking, not lyrically. It will be my next challenge!

  13. Antoine says:

    Hello Arjen.
    what a nice album again.
All of your projects makes me dream, it always sounds amazing.

I’d like to know who’s singing the backing vocals in this album ;)

Thanks for still being so creative ;)

    • Arjen says:

Glad I’ve been able to make you dream, Antoine, my intention exactly! Thanks for the compliment.

The backing vocals are sung by Wilmer Waarbroek. All the info is in the booklet.

      You’re welcome!

  14. Oliver says:

Finally purchased the album. My review: Oh so good. Review over. I will continue to blindly purchase anything Arjen cares to record… and the list of bands in that category is quite small. Arjen, if you ever find your way to San Francisco, USA, I’d like to shake your hand and thank you for enriching my life with your music :) . It really is remarkable how a medium like music has the ability to span the world and touch lives. I can’t help but think that you’d be amused to know that there is a scientist in California who frequently listens to your music on headphones as he sifts through human genome/transcriptome sequence for clues to the origins of human diseases.

    • Arjen says:

Excellent review, short and to-the-point, the way I like it! Thanks for the blind (or is it deaf?) confidence, Oliver. And keep up the good work!

  15. Great work, again!!!! I Received my package some days ago, and can’t stop listening! A pleasant musical journey!!! Thanks for all your music. We can feel you made music with pleasure, with heart!!!!

Below, a review that i did, published in Road to Metal today. Promise that i will send to you an english version!!

    http://roadtometal.blogspot.com.br/2012/05/arjen-lucassen-guiado-pela-criatividade.html (Arjen Lucassen:Guided by creativity)

    • Arjen says:

Thanks so much for your message, Carlos, I’m glad you enjoy it so much! I’m glad the joy with which I made this album comes across so well. Thanks also for the review, can’t read it but it looks great with all the photos and links to the videos :-)

      • Glad you like it! promise you that i will send an english version! some reviews and interviews on Road to Metal we published in portuguese and english! cheers
well, here follows the review intro:
“That this mutli-instrumentalist and composer Dutch fan of Alice Cooper, Bowie, rock operas and feature films, is a true genius in his art and is not afraid to dare, we have no doubt. His creativity has no limits, and we are grateful for this, because each release is synonymous of quality and diversity, with Arjen providing accurate and enjoyable musical journeys.”

  16. Darryl Hall says:

Is it just me, or is this album the most addictive music on planet Earth? I just cannot stop listening to this album! I listen to it at least 5 times a day from start to finish and i’m still listening now!

Arjen you have truley created a masterpiece with your latest album and entered straight away into my top 10 albums of all time!

Thank you for sharing your amazing musical talent.

P.S. Will this addiction ever end? I hope not! :)

    • Arjen says:

Haha…wow…seems you kinda like the album, Darryl! I’m honored…thanks for sharing your thoughts. Okay then…back to the studio to satisfy your addiction :-)

  17. AgmatiV says:

After 01011001 and Guilt Machine (in my opinion your most interesting work ever… since ItEC, of course ;) – very progressive, atmospheric and fresh) it is good to hear something happily sounding! It’s unbelievable how after all these projects you have still managed to produce something different – I’d even say you are Mike Patton of prog music. Lost in the New Real, with all the catchy, oldschool melodies and with your voice, is a pleasure to listen to.

One more thing must be said – you are just so cool! I mean, how many professional musicans really read what their fans have to say and moreover, reply them? Is this a marketing trick? If so, it’s effective as hell!

I hope the album sells well… So you can make us another masterpiece. ;) By the way, don’t listen to the people who always complain that “ItEC was better”. It’s nothing more but nostalgia. Just do your thing, we we’ll love it anyway. :D

    • Arjen says:

Thanks for the kind words, AgmatiV! Glad you enjoy the album. Mike Patton…wow…big compliment indeed.

Haha, no marketing trick! Since I don’t play live anymore this is a great way for me to stay in contact with the listeners. I learn a lot from you all. So I guess it works both ways :-)

Oh yes, the sales and reactions are way above expectations. So I’m already thinking about the next album…

Oh, I don’t mind people saying that. I love challenges…and will strive to make a better album than ITEC, dammit!

  18. Man! with your mind focused exclusively in studio and create music, you will blow our minds with many masterpieces!!!!!

  19. Glenn says:

I didn’t even know this had been released until reading it on angrymetalguy so I placed my order immediately. My kids were also very excited to hear the news as your music is almost all they listen to.

Since I was a musician who was very limited to my choices as a kid I wanted my children to be able to listen to whatever they wanted without saying no to them.
To my surprise they chose bands like Pink Floyd (as well as Roger’s solo work), Deep Purple, Rush and the like. Years ago we discovered your creations they blew us away. Brilliant music that just never gets old. The only negative is that we’ll probably never get to see you play live. Next week however I’m taking all 4 of them to see The Wall Live an experience I thought since childhood I would never see. Never say never.

So thanks for the new album and everything else you’ve given us.

    • Arjen says:

You’re welcome, Glenn, my pleasure! Ah, I see your kids have great taste indeed, excellent education :-) Please say hi to them for me and have fun with the Wall live!

  20. …and every time i listen to the album i find new things…and one more time, my congratulations for the vocals. Great interpretations, in “The New Real” remind me Alice Cooper and in “Yellowstone…” David Bowie!

    • Arjen says:

Cool, thanks Carlos! I can understand the Bowie reference in Yellowstone, as I felt a Peter Murphy influence myself there who is a fan of Bowie as well. But Alice in the New Real? Hmm…anyway, thanks for the compliment :-)

      • well, in “New Real” the way that you sing, the interpretation, remind me some of Alice’s dramatic interpretations, like “Welcome to Nightmare, for example”.
And in “Yellowstone” the way you imposed your voice, the tone remind me Bowie.
