Space Metal - The Metal Observer

The Godfather of creating concept-albums and using superstar musicians for his project has returned with a new side project that is STAR ONE. This isn't a part of his AYREON-band. This is completely new. While AYREON uses various moods and atmospheres, STAR ONE is a full-throttle Progressive Power Metal-CD.

The HAWKWIND-inspired keyboardist continues to use his space sounding atmospheres while mixing it up with his Prog-sounds. The guests who make a major impact on this disc are vocalist Russell Allen from SYMPHONY X, who does a bang up job on the opening "Set Your Controls". There are some key moments during the opening song where there are some fast fingers flying across the keys. They are provided by Jens Johansson from STRATOVARIUS and Yngwie Malmsteen. Fast paced and melodic sets the mood for the next hour. Others who contribute on the disc vocally are world famous drummer and producer Dan Swanö, Floor Jansen from AFTER FOREVER and HAWKWIND-legend Dave Brock.

"High Moon" is a slower, but a much heavier song. The bass is just thick and the drums are simply bombastic. Dan Swanö provides the more low key vocals while Damian Wilson soars to the sky without any limits. "Songs Of The Ocean" adds a little bit more than just Progressive, Arjen brings in his Hammond-organ which gives it that DEEP PURPLE-sound which sounds vintage, yet current. Floor Jansen really hits the notes on this one. Variety is the spice of life here and that is what makes this CD great and unpredictable at times.

For those who are lucky enough to get the limited-edition double-disc, will be treated to a HAWKWIND-Medley with Dave Brock and an appropriately covered version of David Bowie's "Space Oddity" complete with the space sounds of Arjen. This is almost better than the original here. People who are into space fantasy and or great Prog Metal should be prepared to strap yourself in and take a journey into Arjen's mind that is just simply fantastic!
