Jolanda Verduijn – bass Arjen explains: I was working on the demos of the first Ayreon CD and needed someone who could play bass with the fingers (I always play with a guitar-pick). My (then) girlfriend had been playing bass for about a year and a half at that time, but was already quite skilled. She then played the demos at my house. She had done it so well that I asked her to play on the official CD in Oscar’s RS29 studio. I could see Oscar thinking: “oh no, there is Arjen with his girlfriend who’s only been playing bass for a year, but she just ‘has’ to be involved.” But you should have seen the look on his face when Jolanda effortlessly played the bass parts for songs like ‘Sail Away to Avalon’, super tight and grooving. Of course people can accuse me of not being quite objective, but believe me when I say that Jolanda is extremely musical and talented, and if she didn’t have so many other interests beside music she would have made it big in the music business. |
