Devon Graves – vocals

Studio Report:
Dead Soul Tribe frontman Devon Graves (formerly known as Buddy Lackey) was at the Electric Castle Studio to record his vocals for the The Human Equation. Read what Arjen has to say about this American living in Austria, and how the recording session went.

– What made you choose Devon for this Ayreon project?
Arjen: I once heard Psychotic Waltz about 10 years ago when a journalist played it to me and I remember I really liked the singer. The record company Inside Out regularly sends me CDs they release. Among them was Devon’s new band Dead Soul Tribe. Again I was impressed by his voice and decided to contact him. I heard in his music that we have much of the same influences, like Jethro Tull. And as it turned out we had much more in common.

– How did you get in touch with Devon? Arjen: Via Inside Out. I sent him an email, and he was interested straight away. Especially when I told him I am an Ian Anderson fan as well!

– Describe the recording session in three words. Arjen: Professional, relaxed and fun.

– How would you describe Devon’s voice? Arjen: Very versatile. We recorded many different aspects of his voice; gentle, powerful, harmonies and dramatic. And they all sound equally fantastic.

– What was the most memorable moment? Arjen: His english pronounciation of the word ‘world’. For a brief moment I had John Lennon flashbacks here!

– What was something you absolutely didn’t expect? Arjen: I didn’t expect Devon to be such a funny person, he seems very serious and dark when you hear his music and read his interviews. We have been quoting funny movie scenes thoughout the recording sessions!

– What was something Devon did not expect? Arjen: Hmm…I guess what every singer will not expect…how tall I am!

– Devon has the unique ability to… Arjen: …please me.

– Decribe the endresult of the session.
Arjen: I am extremely satisfied about the fact that I’ve been able to capture all these different sides of Devon’s voice and personality. I would really like to work with him again in the future.
